Yes, I've just made a sandbox for us to play with (http://beta.vocaloidism.com/). Right now it's empty for theme customization, but I can import the blog news if you want to see it.

If you want to be part of the theme developer for the blog, tell me and I'll make you into a theme administrator for the sandbox. Currently, the sandbox is running Thematic (http://themeshaper.com/thematic/) - a base theme which powers sites like "We love maids (http://anime2.kokidokom.net/)." - check their customization. It's easy to customize the code, just log in to WordPress, click on Appearance, and click on Editor. All PHP and CSS files can be edited there. If you need an image to be uploaded to the server, upload the image to somewhere (like Tinypic) and give me the link - I can't make a FTP-only user for now.

About the blog redesign, we have two choices. The first is this, Thematic (http://themeshaper.com/thematic/), which requires a lot of code-editing to make it look good. The second is Thesis (http://diythemes.com/thesis/), while is very easy to customize, is not free. If developing a theme with Thematic is not possible, I'll shell out some cash for Thesis. Thesis features a powerful control panel so it can be customized without editing the code much. Please discuss things related to the blog redesign in here. If you need anything, feel free to PM me anytime you want. I wish akukame can see this too as he's quite skillful with PHP...

I'll play with it some, when I wake up~. I don't really like Thesis much, honestly, but I wish I could see it with our blog before actually saying something like that. ><

Thesis is very easy to customize, though. Anyways, if you want to be a Theme Administrator on the sandbox, PM me your desired username and password. =D

I still don't like Thematic for how... one-sided, it is. But eh, good luck with the layout. :x

Thematic is problematic if no-one can edit the code as it doesn't have any kind of control panel... And I'm not much of a code monkey either. I installed Thesis in the blog - check it and tell me what I should do to make it look good. Every setting is in the default except for the sidebar and navigation links. So, what font should I use, should the border stay, what background color would be nice, etc. Let's try it with this theme first.

Default fonts. Always use default fonts.

So pick one:

Arial (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arial), Times New Roman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Times_Roman), Courier New (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Courier_(typeface)), Tahoma (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tahoma_(typeface)), Verdana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verdana).

Which one's the best? I posted an example post. Really, I'm font-blind. >_>;

It depends on how you want the layout to look like.

The forum uses Verdana, while the sandbox first used Times New Roman I believe.

...Actually those fonts are included with the forum, may as well.

Arial size 2
Arial size 5

Courier New size 2

Tahoma size 2

Times New Roman size 2

Verdana size 2

All right, I'm going to use Verdana - looks better than Times New Roman anyways. And then how big should the content area be? It's currently 800px. The sidebar is currently 200px.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm maxed out at 1024x768. What you're suggesting is too big for my laptop. >:

700 & 150

*gets smacked*

600 + 150 sidebar, perhaps?

The resolution Joe is at is the current standard, so it'd be a good move to accomodate for resolutions of 768 width, at the least.

I don't see why we should limit it to 750px. Joe's width is 1024px, not 768px, remember? >_>; - Lowered the content to 600px - I didn't quite like it since it's too small in my computer. Plus, most of the people that open this site have a resolution of 1280x800. Sot that means 1280px. And I want the sidebar to be the blogosphere standard, which is 200px. I'd need it for some banners as well anyways. 150px would be fine, but let's talk about it later on. How about the background colors?

Well I may be viewing this site at 1440x900, but I NEVER maximize my windows unless it's a photo/illustration program or Notepad. Pretty sure I'm not the only one with this kind of setup. Photoshop say my current viewing area on Chrome is 1086x633.

kevinayP

That's still well over 1000px. I don't know about you guys but when browsing, my Firefox window is always maximized. So yeah, full 1440x900 pixel here, minus the Windows Seven taskbar. But it's still 1440px wide.

640 should be the minimum width for content, imo. Maybe 720 and 200?

I'm an idiot, sorry.

Was thinking it was up from 640 and epic-failed on logic.

1024x768 is standard, so 1000 is fine. 800 is probably the most accomodating.

Someone should play with the fonts in the Sandbox - the content font (Verdana) is fine and I like it, but what about the other fonts? Sidebar Heading, Heading, etc. And background colors. Or should we keep it white? Content width is now 750px and sidebar width is 200px. Is it fine now? Should we change that to 800px?

Joe_Mello

Too big >:

Miyuki
01-21-2010, 04:47 AM
So basically:

Use percentage, not fixed width.

kevinayP
01-21-2010, 05:55 AM
No, I'm going with fixed width. Fluid kind of breaks the layout because the images that are posted aren't resized automatically. I like fixed more. Too big? How about 650px for the content area?

Joe_Mello

Lightbox (or whatever it was) won't work?

Joe_Mello
02-05-2010, 12:32 AM
Also, I'd rather have the current layout functioning than trying to make a new one. This would mean stripping out the unnecessary flash elements and what not and making sure the site stops crashing.
